Homework will be given out on a Thursday. Generally, this will be:
* 10 spellings to learn
* maths (often online or times tables, children have their login codes)
The children need to read at least 3 times a week. We would really like to foster a love of reading in Year 5, rather than children feeling they 'have' to read. Their 3 'reads' can be done in a variety of ways:
Children can read to an adult ~ this is important to help the children progress with their own level of reading.
You can read to your child ~ many of the children really love to hear a story and, especially for those who either can't access or don't yet have the reading stamina for 'bulkier' books, it enables them to become more engrossed in books that are more appropriate for their growing interests and levels of maturity.
Listen to story tapes / CDs / audio books ~ a nice way for the children to have some 'space' from brothers and sisters and also listen to stories which have some of the excitement built up with different characters / voices etc.
The important thing, is to encourage the children to get 'involved' with books. The children can read whatever they wish ~ as long as there are words!
