In year 4 we follow a maths scheme called ‘White Rose’. It teaches maths units in blocks, starting with number and place value, then moving onto addition and subtraction before half term.
At the beginning of each unit the children will take a ‘cold’ test on blue paper and we will compare these scores to our end of unit ‘hot’ tasks on pink paper to show how much the children learnt over the unit and any gaps they may still have.
We will be having a big push on confidence with test style questions and children will practising these in class most Wednesday mornings and bringing them home to share with you.
In June this year, all year 4 pupils will be required to take a mandatory times table test. We are beginning to prepare for this, so lots of practise on all our tables (up to 12x12) will be required for all children. TT Rock Stars is a great way to practise these at home and this will be set as maths homework most weeks.
All our Year 4 standards (what we are looking for in Year 4 in the children’s writing) are covered with our English class mascot, Super STAN. We have been working on a different standard each week and will continue this up to Christmas. During the Spring and Summer term we expect the children to be implementing these standards into their writing instinctively so we can concentrate on extended and creative writing and really have some fun with our English work.
The children will be having regular ERIC time (everyone reading in class) and will get to listen to a class text. To help with ERIC, the children are more than welcome to bring a cushion from home that they can use to help make themselves comfortable at their place or on the carpet.
Topic and homework
Our science topics this year are Animals and their habitats, Teeth and our digestive system, States of matter, Electricity and Sound.
In Geography, we learn about the UK, Europe and the world and we focus on map skills.
In History, we learn about the Anglo Saxons, The Vikings and The Victorians, during which we enjoy a great day out at The Black Country Living Museum.
We will be taking part in RE every Friday, focusing on our Year 4 Harvest assembly to start, then learning about the trinity, Pentecost, the world Jesus wants us to live in and why life is a journey.
Homework will primarily be the children ensuring that they are reading daily, and evidencing this in their reading records at least 3 times per week. Each time the children read to an adult at home, they can have their reading record signed and their reading bookmark ticked. 3 ticks on their bookmark will earn them one house-point. The children have the opportunity to read and change their reading books at the beginning of each day and after lunchtimes however, they will need to have a parent comment or sign to say they have completed a book before they are permitted to change it.
Weekly homework this year will mostly be computer or iPad based.
We need to ensure we are practising both our spellings and times tables, on our recommended apps or websites, but also in any way your child would prefer.
We will also be sending Wednesday work home weekly and it would be of great benefit to go through this work with your child at home.
Homework books will need to be handed in on a Friday.
We hope that Year 4 have a great year with us this year!
Feel free to get in touch, at any time, with any concerns or questions.
